Curved Border
Home Up

I wanted to have a carpeted area for relaxing by TV and stereo with improved acoustics.  Since the majority of Atlantis is a hardwood floor, I needed an interesting way to separate the wood from the carpet.  rather than make this sharp right angles, I chose to make a couple of curves in the border.

Unfortunately, I don't have any photos of the routing of the floor (left) to create the area where the border curve is inserted.  I used the technique of a router mounted on a compass arm just as in the curved landing page.
To make the curved section, two similarly colored long floor boards are ripped into many thin segments using the bandsaw.  Each of these pieces can easily be bent to the radius needed.  The curved plywood pieces are a form.
Next, the glued segments are set into the form and clamped overnight.  The resulting assembly is rock solid and the glue lines almost disappear.
Here is the finished curve, sanded and trimmed, ready to be hammered and nailed into the floor.
The fit was so tight, it took a pretty fair amount of hammering with a mallet.

Completely in, and the seam is very tight.

This will look great when the carpet is in!
